The next-gen BMW M3 is expected to be launched soon. Before that happens, the German auto giant has confirmed that the upcoming M3 won’t be a plug-in hybrid like the BMW M5.
BMW M boss Frank Van Meel has confirmed that the M3 will stick to a combustion engine. Under the hood will be an updated version of the S58 inline-six, with the new M Ignite technology. This will offer better response, more punch, and the same engaging character that makes the M3 special.

There will be some electrification, but only in the form of a 48V mild-hybrid system. This setup is lightweight and designed to support performance, not take over it. That means no added bulk like the BMW M5’s plug-in hybrid system.
BMW’s plan is to offer two clear choices. The petrol-powered M3 will focus on driving feel and engagement. Alongside it, a fully electric M3 based on the Neue Klasse platform will push performance in a different direction.
So, no middle ground. Just a proper ICE M3 for enthusiasts, and an all-electric version for the future.
