Mercedes-AMG GLE and GLS updated with 600+ hp V8 engine

Mercedes-AMG has updated its GLE and GLS SUVs with an all-new V8 engine. Both models now come with a motorsport-inspired flat-plane-crank twin-turbo powerhouse.

It is a 4.0-litre V8, producing 604 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system that adds a subtle 23 hp boost while smoothing out power delivery. The flat-plane crankshaft, combined with a revised firing order, promises sharper responses, reduced vibration, and a more engaging soundtrack.

Apart from that, there’s also a reworked fuel injection system, improved airflow through redesigned intake and exhaust ports, and updated turbo hardware. All these tweaks and upgrades have ensured that both these massive SUVs can sprint from 0-62 mph in under 4 seconds. Their top speeds have been limited to 174 mph.

Mercedes-AMG has also updated the active ride control system to limit body roll. There are also the strengthened driveshafts to handle the added punch. The GLS even gains a rear axle locking system for improved agility.

As for the aesthetics, we’d say that the updates are subtle but effective. The SUVs now feature new AMG grilles, larger air intakes, and fresh lighting signatures. Mercedes-AMG has also thrown in massive wheels, up to 23 inches on the GLS, to complete the look.
