BMW is quietly phasing out its M Competition models

BMW is phasing out the ‘M Competition’ trim. But no need to panic, as all its spicy features will be available on the standard M models.

During a recent interaction with the media, BMW M CEO Frank van Meel confirmed that the Competition trim is being discontinued, as a majority of customers prefer the higher-performance versions.

“More than 80% of our customers went straight for the Competition. So we said, let’s just make that the standard one. You could say that every M model today is a Competition,” van Meel said.

Van Meel said that M cars will be available in three variants. In addition to the base trim, there will be the CS and CSL trims. Most of the features offered in the Competition trim, including the retuned engine, will be included in the base M version.

The CS and CSL versions will be for those who are more serious about on-track performance and will focus more on weight reduction.

The MY2026 BMW M2 and M5 no longer offer a Competition version. Other M models will follow suit.
