Corvette ZR1’s immense downforce causing paint damage?

It looks like the Corvette ZR1 might be a little too good at its job. Some owners are reporting paint damage near the rear wing of their cars, especially after high-speed track runs exceeding 180 mph. Interestingly, the alleged reason behind this is said to be the car’s immense downforce!

Reports say that this isn’t a structural issue. Instead, it appears to be a side effect of the ZR1’s extreme aerodynamics. Chevrolet claims the car can generate up to 1,200 pounds of downforce at speed, and that massive load is concentrated around the rear wing and its mounting points.

Under such intense forces, the surrounding body panels experience significant stress. And under repeated high-speed use over a prolonged period of time, this can lead to small cracks or chips in the paint around those areas.

There is no official statement from Chevrolet as to what the actual reason is for the paint damage and whether the massive downforce of the Corvette ZR1 is indeed causing this.
